Claims that female Hindu and Sikh students in Luton are being targeted by Muslim men and groomed for conversion to Islam have been rejected by the university and community groups.
The University of Bedfordshire said that it is unaware of any problem on its campus and Dr Fiaz Hussain, spokesman for the Luton Council of Mosques, also did not know anything about the allegations.
He pointed out that the Koran makes clear that people cannot be forced to convert.
The groups spoke out after Luton was linked with the practice of aggressive conversion by the Hindu Forum of Britain and the British Organisation of Sikh Students.
In 2002, leaders of Luton's Muslim, Sikh and Hindu communities reacted angrily to extremist literature circulated in the town which singled out Hindu and Sikh young women as being easy targets.
