Muslim anger as schools win right to ban veils
A Minister provoked anger among Muslims yesterday after backing headteachers who ban pupils from wearing the full Islamic face veil.
Schools Minister Jim Knight said security concerns and good teaching in class must always take precedence over the rights of children to wear religious dress.
But the Islamic Human Rights Commission denounced the Government's guidelines on school uniforms as "shocking".
The row came after a 12-year-old girl lost a legal battle to wear the full-face niqab in class in her Buckinghamshire school last month.
Mr Knight said schools should consult parents when setting uniform policies.
But he went on: "While they should make every effort to accommodate social, religious or medical requirements of individual pupils, the needs of safety, security and effective learning in the school must always take precedence."
