Austria, a model for coexistence among religions - Arab diplomat
VIENNA, March 27 (KUNA) -- Europe has come to view Austria as a model of peaceful coexistence among followers of heavenly religions, said Arab League permanent delegate to the UN organizations there, Mikhail Wahba, pointing out that the Austrian constitution was the sole one across the continent that recognized Islam as an official religion, in 1912.
In an interview with the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Wahba added that Austria was always keen on the convergence of religions, a matter so essential to Muslims there following the rise in the phenomenon of hatred to Islam and Muslims. He pointed to the efforts by the Austrian government to enhance Islam's existence in Europe, and especially at home.
Taking part in the Vienna "Islam in Europe" conference last week, Wahba had distributed a statement by the Arab League General Secretariat tackling hostilities against Muslims in Europe and urging European officials to work on curbing them.
He said he himself had delivered messages to the Austrian diplomatic circles, a host of cultural and social bodies and civil society organizations underlining the importance of convergence among religions and not "Clash of Civilizations" as urged by Samuel Huntington.
