VIRGINIA TRIOLI: The Sydney cleric Sheikh Al Hilali has defied an order not to speak to the media following his controversial comments about women and Australia. The Lebanese Muslim Association yesterday gagged five clerics from the Lakemba mosque, including the Sheikh, to help mend relations with the broader community. The ban applies to all media, especially Arabic radio, but today Sheikh Al Hilali ignored the order.
SHEIKH AL HILALI: I'm friends with media. Media is our eyes, our heart, our blood. No worries.
VIRGINIA TRIOLI: The clerics have been warned they could lose their positions as spiritual leaders at the mosque if they defy the ban. The National Council of Imams meets in two weeks’ time to consider Sheikh Al Hilali's future.
