Stop Muslim immigration, NSW Christian Democrats say
The New South Wales Christian Democrats are calling for an immediate moratorium on Islamic immigration.
Christian Democrats MP, Fred Nile, believes it is necessary because there has been no serious study on the potential effects on Australia of the Muslims who are already here.
Reverend Nile says temporarily stopping immigration would give some breathing space to assess the situation.
He says while the policy may be offensive, he stands by it.
"It's an issue that's affecting everyone and I think many of the political parties are frightened to even discuss the issue," he said.
He says in the meantime Australia should extend a welcoming hand to the many thousands of persecuted Christians in the Middle East.
Keysar Trad from the Islamic Friendship Association says Reverend Nile's comments are ill-informed.
He says there are many obstacles for Muslim people wanting to come to Australia.
"What he's doing is really calling for something that is virtually there," he said.
"It's not there as a ban altogether but obstacles make a virtual ban.
"Particularly when our immigration policy, as clearly stated by the former immigration minister, that policy is more in favour of European migrants and more in favour of people who are not from a Muslim background."
