DAR AL ISLAM - PAKISTAN: PROBLEMS WITHIN THE UMMAH SHOULD BE SOLVED WITH A HOLISTIC APPROACH

Pakistan calls for holistic approach to meet challenges within Islamic world

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Sunday emphasized the need to adopt a holistic approach to meet the challenges within the Muslim countries and the external factors that confront the Islamic world.

Talking to Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ibsanoglu and the OIC Foreign Ministers who called on him here, the Pakistani prime minister said that the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East demanded solidarity and unanimity of views among the Muslim states and a fresh initiative was needed to solve the festering disputes.

He said that the initiative taken by Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf and Sunday's conference would lay the foundation for strengthening of the peace process in the Middle East.

"It is the first step towards a long journey for the solution of conflicts in the Middle East and we are encouraged by the fact that His Majesty King Abdullah (of Saudi Arabia) has agreed to convene a summit meeting of a core group of Muslim countries," he said.

Aziz emphasized the need to solve the long-standing issues through dialogue and understanding as the present situation if left unattended would have disastrous consequences for the region and the world.

He said that efforts should be made to fight terrorism and extremism and to promote harmony among different cultures, faiths and civilizations.
