Religion and politics are inseparable: Syed Ali Geelani

SHARIQ MAJEED Jammu, Feb 18: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Sunday said that religion and politics cannot be separated from each other.

Islam, Geelani said is against the concepts of capitalism, socialism, communism, nationalism and even secularism. “Quran offers the most appropriate remedies for ending bloodshed in the world as it is a complete way of life,” he said.

Referring to the Kashmir issue, Geelani said that it is not integral part of India; instead it is a disputed territory and awaits resolution.

He was addressing a gathering at the release function of second Gojri Translation of Quran at Abhinav Theatre, here.Appreciating the translators for the translation of the holy book in Gojri, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Chairman said, “It is good that they have translated Quran in Gojri. We should popularize the teachings of Quran in Urdu and Arabic.”

Meanwhile, the organizers of the function had to face tough time when two leaders from BJP and Congress walked out of the function during Geelani’s reference to Kashmir issue. Nirmal Singh, former state President BJP staged a walkout while Geelani was asserting that Kashmir is a disputed territory and he returned only after Geelani left the venue.

Talking to media persons outside the venue, Singh said, “This was a religious gathering. He (Geelani) shouldn’t have made a political comment. Was this the fora where one raises political issues?”

Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister and Congress Leader Taj Mohuiddin who was sharing the dias with Geelani, left when Chairman Hurriyat started his speech.

However, Health Minister and Senior Congress leader Mangat Ram Sharma, who listened to the entire speech of Geelani, took a dig at him for raising Kashmir issue in the religious gathering.Mangat said, “He (Geelani) should not have raised this issue here. This is the holy book release function and there should be no politicking in religious functions”.

“He (Geelani) was my colleague in assembly. We have even provided him Medical aid when he underwent bye-pass surgery. But see nowadays when he (Geelani) speaks something, we all perspire,” Sharma said in a lighter vein.
