Iran is such a mixed bag of contradictions. Just when you think Ahmadinejad is truly the wild child held on a leash and programmed by the Ayatollah, ... you hear reports of Khamenei reaching out to the U.S. via the Saudi's 'because' of the escalated tensions caused by Ahmadinejad.
Other reports (asia times) suggest the Ayatollah is trying to reign in Ahmadinejad and curtail his nuclear ambitions.
Whatever the story; Putin has no love for the U.S. for all the reasons laid out so succintly by the newyorker article : http://www.newyorker.com/printables/fact/070129fa_fact_specter
"why are Putin's opponents dying" which is a terrific article.
Iran is a very real threat and I really do just hope back-channel talks calm the situation before a silly mistake by Iran or the U.S. forces war.
What do you think?

Whatever the reports are about Ahmadinjad being held in check by the ayatollahs are nothing more than a front for infidel consumption...
You must remember that Ahmadinejad was handpicked to win by the ayatollahs...Iran does not have "free elections"...Iran is playing an excellent game of chess and as of right now is winning in a big way...
As for what OUR response should be is a very clear and principled stand...The U.S. government should stand up and clearly state that it will do this this and this if Iran does this, and it will do this this and this if Iran does this...
When Iran goes ahead, our response should be swift and severe...WE are right and WE have the right to defend ourselves, pre-emptively if needed...
Iran has not only threatened Israel (its annihilation) but it has threatened us, the Great Satan...
Talk does not work with such actors as Iran, they only understand action, swift and severe action at that...
Unfortunately, the U.S. government and much of our population is unwilling to actually face and identify our enemies...With proper identification of the enemy come the very unpalatable thoughts and ideas about possible solutions...In this case, the solutions are ugly...
I can only hope that the United States government as well as its population will be willing enough to do what needs doing, when their very existence hangs in the balance...
I still have the hope, that in the nick of time the United States will wake up from the dhimmi coma it has chosen to slumber in and do what needs doing...
