US to resume push for Israeli-Palestinian peace
WASHINGTON - US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will try to revitalize the stalled Israel-Palestinian peace process during a meeting of the international group mediating the conflict.
Rice will host a gathering of the so-called quartet Friday in Washington, ahead of her own trip to the region in mid-February to attend a planned summit between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to advance the long-stalled “roadmap” peace plan.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will join Rice in Washington for a meeting aimed at speeding the peace process and finding ways to shore up the Abbas government. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, will also attend.
The Washington has been under increasing pressure to play a deeper role amid criticism that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has taken a back seat to the US-led conflict in Iraq.
