Addressing the misconceptions of Islam
ISNA president discusses falsehoods surrounding her faith
Ingrid Mattson, the first female president of the Islamic Society of North America, North America's largest Muslim organization, gave a lecture titled "Understanding Islam" Wednesday in the Great Hall in the Memorial Union. The lecture was attended by nearly 400 people.
In her lecture, Mattson addressed many issues including ignorance among Muslims, misconceptions about Islam, as well as some of the reasons why Islam began.
"Obviously, there is a lot of misunderstanding, so it's a good point to start," Mattson said.
Mattson began her lecture by discussing some of the misunderstandings that exist among Muslims about their own religion, which contributes to the stereotypes that are prevalent among non-Muslims.
"Non-Muslims are not the only ones who misunderstand Islam; there are a lot of Muslims who misunderstand Islam, and that is causing a lot of problems," Mattson said.
