Hamburg- Germany's national council of Jews has criticizedplans by ZDF, a public broadcaster, to post a Muslim sermon on itswebsite every Friday, similar to a TV Christian sermon broadcast onSundays.
ZDF's religious affairs department is drafting plans to commissiona weekly talk about faith, and is expected to choose a range of imamsto write the sermons, directed at the 3.2 million to 3.5 million outof Germany's population of 82 million who are of Muslim heritage.
Another public broadcaster, the ARD chain, offers a Christianaddress every Sunday. ZDF wants a matching programme on Friday, theday of worship in the Islamic week. The Jewish Sabbath is onSaturday.Salomon Korn, deputy chairman of the Jewish council, said in aninterview with the news magazine Focus to appear next week that hedid not agree with special treatment for Muslims. He called insteadfor a multi-faith programme open to theologians of all religions.
Korn, who is a member of ZDF's television advisory council, toldthe newspaper Bild, "If they are going to give Muslims air time, theyshould give it to all the religions. Otherwise there'll be adispute."
ZDF said it would not initially be broadcasting the sermon, butonly placing the text or an audio file of it on its website to see ifthe audience showed interest in it. The project is part of a ZDF drive this autumn to help migrants integrate into German life.
