FRANCE: NINE AL-QAEDA SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN TERROR SWOOP

Paris, 14 Feb. (AKI) - Eleven people have been arrested in an anti-terror operation carried out in the capital, Paris, and in southwestern France, the interior ministry announced on Wednesday. Nine of those detained are suspected al-Qaeda members believed to have been part of networks recruiting jihadist fighters to be sent to Iraq, according to the interior ministry.

"The operation began on Tuesday at Paris's Orly airport with the arrest of two men returning from abroad," the interior ministry stated. The two young men were detained after being expelled from Syria where they were tryng to cross in to Iraq, France's AFP news agency said, quoting unnamed sources close to the operation.

It is not known how many volonteer jihadists may have been trained and sent to Iraq by the networks to which the nine al-Qaeda suspects are allegedly linked, the sources said.
