Islamic association denies claims Hilali pensioned off
A spokesman for Australia's most controversial Muslim cleric, Sheikh Taj el-Din al-Hilali, has rejected claims that the mufti has been given a golden handshake in return for abandoning claims to leadership positions.
Sheikh Hilali has already been banned from preaching in mosques following uproar over remarks in which he compared women to uncovered meat.
Now it is being reported that he has been offered a pension and free accommodation in return for an end to his role as an Islamic religious leader.
But Islamic Friendship Association president Keysar Trad says those claims are untrue.
"As far as I'm aware they're not correct," he said.
"I have had a conversation with him and whilst we hear all sorts of rumours on the street, none of these rumours could be substantiated.
"Let's not forget that the organisation that determines the position of mufti is presently being looked after by a court-appointed administrator."
