DAR AL ISLAM-U.A.E. & IRAN: UNITED ARAB EMIRATES & IRAN HAVE CONCERNS & INTERESTS

Mottaki: Iran, UAE share regional concerns, interests

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Tuesday that Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have shared regional concerns and interests.

His remarks were made at a joint press conference with the visiting UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who came with a message from his country's president, Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, for President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Referring to Iran-UAE long-term relations which he said have their basis on the states' historical commonalties, Mottaki said there was no obstacle to promotion of bilateral ties.

The Iranian minister referred to comments made this week by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warning regional heads of states against new conspiracies of enemies to sow discord among Muslim nations of the region.

He said these conspiracies would bear no fruit as Iran and Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) member states have a common determination to maintain good and cordial relations.

Saying Iran was the UAE's top trading partner in 2006, Mottaki said he and his UAE counterpart discussed new avenues for wider economic cooperation, including joint investments, in their talks on Tuesday.
