TUNIS, Tunisia - Nearly 30 Islamic extremists involved in a deadly gunbattle with police in this North African country had blueprints of foreign embassies and documents naming foreign envoys, the interior minister said Friday.

Haj Kacem described the 27 people involved in the Jan. 3 clash as “Salafist terrorists,” referring to the hardline movement among Muslim fundamentalists, the official news agency TAP reported.

At least 14 people, including two security forces, were killed in the shootout in Soliman, 25 miles south of the capital, Tunis. Fifteen people were arrested.

Six members of the group - five Tunisians and a Mauritanian - had crossed into Tunisia from neighboring Algeria, the minister said in a meeting with Tunisia’s ruling party. They were joined by 21 others and were followed by intelligence agents, he said.

“The intelligence services know these people, their names and their Salafist terrorist tendencies, but preferred to surprise them ... and unveil their designs and their eventual links with other elements,” the minister said.

Kacem said blueprints of some foreign embassies and documents with the names of some foreign diplomats were seized following the shootouts. He did not name the embassies or identify the diplomats. Locally made explosives were also seized.
