DAR AL ISLAM - IRAN: IRAN DEMANDS THE RELEASE OF 5 DIPLOMATS CAPTURED BY AMERICANS DURING A RAID

Tehran demand to free 'diplomats'

"Americans should immediately release the five Iranians and pay compensation for the damages they caused to our office in Arbil," Mohammad Ali Hosseini told a weekly news conference, adding the five were "involved in consulate affairs".

"Their activities were legal and in the framework of law," Hosseini said when asked whether the five Iranians were members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards.

What they were doing was consular work. These were employees who were doing their job according to the rules," foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini told reporters.

"What the Americans claim is incorrect. They want to create a climate that justifies their illegal action," he added.

...

"Americans want to radicalise the atmosphere in Iraq to justify their occupation, but we will act wisely," Hosseini said.

Meanwhile, Iran's top national security official Ali Larijani on Sunday left on a visit to Saudi Arabia for talks with King Abdullah, the official IRNA news agency reported.

IRNA said Larijaniwill discuss issues of mutual interest related to the Islamic world and the regional situation.

Larijani's visit comes just over a month after Shiite Iran expressed concern over suggestions that Saudi Arabia might intervene on the side of Iraq's Sunnis if the United States swiftly pulls out of Iraq.
