Arab culture is impeding intellectual growth: Expert

The Arab culture and traditions are impeding intellectual development and free thinking among societies in the region, according to a leading Arab writer and thinker.

“We, the Arab people, are shying away from learning because of our culture," said Dr Mohammed Arkon, while addressing a symposium on "Social Changes" being held at the Doha Sheraton.

He noted that the Arab people are far away or compelled to be far away from understanding what are being discussed by intellectuals in other parts of the world.

“Culture is playing the essential role to decide for societies what issues are allowed to discuss and which ones are prohibited," he said, while talking on the topic "Values in the era of globalisation."
He observed that the Islamic notion of Haram (taboo) is being badly misused and misinterpreted in the Arab world.

“ This aspect in our culture is controlling us and preventing from moving forward," said Arkon.

People are creating confusion by using Arabic terms differently. There are major differences between the real meaning of a word and how it has been used most of the times. Finding out the exact meaning requires careful study and search, he added.

" We have to revise all aspects of the Arab culture imposed on our societies after the era of colonisation. Since then we are living in the dark as our educational establishments are teaching ignorance," said Arkon.

He noted that the Arab culture has closed doors in front of any social issues, especially when it is related to religion. The current education system in the Arab world is totally corrupt and is useful only to abet the ignorance of the people, he commented.
