DAR AL HARB-U.S.A.-MICHIGAN: OAKLAND UNIVERSITY OFFERING CLASSES ON JUDAISM & ISLAM

Islamic, Jewish classes to be offered in January

An introduction to Islam and a crash course on the Jewish religion will be offered at sites in the area starting in January.

Through a donation from a coalition of Muslim donors, Oakland University will offer a new minor in Islamic Studies. Imam Achmat Salie, hired by OU as a coordinator for the class, will help develop and shape the minor in the coming year.

The first class, an Introduction to Islam, begins Thursday, Jan. 4.

"There has never been a more pressing need than at the present time to replace ignorance about religious issues with a national understanding," Director of Religious Studies Gary Shepherd said about the new minor.

Rabbi Boruch Cohen of the Birmingham-Bloomfield Chai Center offers a free five-week course on the basics of the Jewish religion. The first class begins 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, at 1578 Lakeside Drive, in Birmingham.
