Berlusconi Accuses Prodi Of Anti-Americanism
ROME, Jan. 15--Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi criticized Romano Prodi’s government on Sunday for pursuing an “anti-American and anti-Western“ foreign policy, the ANSA news agency reported.
“America has placed us on a list of untrustworthy countries, a decision which will have repercussions on Italy’s foreign trade,“ Berlusconi was quoted as saying.
According to Prodi’s predecessor the current centre-left government has “turned a blind eye to Hezbollah while not letting up on its criticism of Israel--the only true democracy in the Middle East,“ AFP reported.
Criticizing an “anti-American and anti-Western attitude“, the leader of the Italian centre-right also highlighted what he perceives as an alignment with a Franco-Spanish axis of power in favor of an “Arab-European strategy“.
Prodi dismissed the attack, saying: “We are absolutely loyal.“ Foreign Minister Massimo D’Alema, on a visit to Doha, also defended the government’s stance as “not anti-American.“
D’Alema accused Berlusconi of pursuing an “ideological campaign to divide the country“, the Ansa news agency reported.

Rome has also come out in favor of talks with Iran and Syria to end the violence in Iraq and criticized US military raids in Somalia against Islamists and suspected Al-Qaeda targets.
