Christian leader warns of civil war in Lebanon

BEIRUT: The leader of one of Lebanon’s main Christian political groups warned yesterday that attempts by the Hezbollah-led opposition to remove the government by force will lead to "civil war".

"Some parties are trying to overthrow the government and the regime by force," Samir Geagea, head of the Lebanese Forces party, told a news conference in Beirut.

In remarks directed at Hezbollah and its leader Hassan Nasrallah, Geagea said that Prime Minister Fuad Siniora "will not fall under pressure... and if you continue, there will be civil war."
Hezbollah’s push for Siniora to make way for a new government in which it would have a stronger voice escalated this week, with a general strike on Tuesday followed by rioting in Beirut on Thursday.

Both days were marked by deadly violence, with three people killed on Tuesday and four on Thursday.

Geagea, a staunch opponent of Syrian involvement in Lebanon’s affairs, said that Tuesday’s walkout – which brought the nation to a standstill – had been a "coup attempt."
