Court in south German state upholds headscarf ban for Muslim teachers
The constitutional court in the south German state of Bavaria has upheld a ban for Muslim teachers to wear a headscarf in school, news reports said Monday.
The Bavarian court dismissed a complaint filed by a Berlin-based Islamic group which viewed the head scarf ban as violating the constitution since it infringed on the religious freedom of Muslims.
Bavaria's conservative-controlled state parliament passed the controversial law in November 2004.
Several German states have adopted strict anti-headscarf legislation as a consequence of a Supreme Court ruling which permitted federal states to bar Muslim public employees with headscarves, provided they have the necessary legislation on the books.
