EU must recognize Iran's right to use nuclear energy: German MP
The European Union has to acknowledge Iran's right to have a peaceful civilian nuclear program, if it wants to settle the ongoing nuclear row, a leading lawmaker of the radical leftist opposition Linke party said Tuesday.
"As head of the EU, the German Foreign Minister (Frank-Walter) Steinmeier is not well advised to step up the sanction pressure on Iran. To allow Iran the peaceful use of nuclear energy within the framework of the IAEA, points the way more easily towards a solution of the conflict," Monika Knoche said in a press release.
The MP who is also a member of the foreign affairs committee, stressed that Steinmeier should undertake every effort "not to get trapped in the failed and dangerous US escalation strategy" in Iraq.
The EU foreign ministers should "not accept the new Mideast policy of the Bush government", added Knoche.
