Home sweet home for Islamic Center?
By Jack Komperda
Carol Stream officials are concerned about all the details they don’t know concerning an Islamic center’s plans to operate in a residential property just outside of the village.
A group calling itself the Almadina Islamic Center is asking DuPage County for permission to operate the religious institution from a single-family home at 2N579 Morton Road.
The group is expected to present its request Thursday before the county’s zoning board of appeals. Several directors for the group couldn’t be reached for comment.
While the property is outside the village of Carol Stream and carries a West Chicago mailing address, Carol Stream village trustees expressed concern over the implications of allowing a religious group to operate on property within the village’s future planning jurisdiction.
“It’s difficult to understand what this building could become,” Trustee Skip Stubbs said.
Trustee Pamela Fenner echoed Stubbs’ concerns, saying, “I’d like to have all of the information to make an educated decision” about the proposal.
