Berlin Islam confab urges West to deepen understanding of Prophet Mohammad
An international conference on the personality of Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him), hosted Saturday by the cultural section of the Islamic Republic of Iran Embassy in Berlin, called on the western world to deepen its understanding of the universal message of the Prophet of Islam.
"This issue is very important in the contemporary world and it is universal. The prophet addresses the whole universe. No group can claim the heritage of the Great Prophet," said Iran's Ambassador to Germany Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh in his opening address to the conference, featuring Berlin-based foreign diplomats, international scholars and researchers. He stressed that the universal message of the holy prophet included "always remembering God, justice, going after knowledge, progress and tolerance".
"Islamic teachings are against any act that may jeopardize humanity," Akhoundzadeh added. The Iranian envoy said the ultimate goal of Islam is to establish "tranquility, peace and justice for all humanity".
The Cultural Attache of the Islamic Republic of Iran Homayoun Hemmati echoed the remarks by Iran's top diplomat in Germany by saying, "Prophet Mohammad belongs to all humanity and not only to Islam. We need a better understanding of all religions." Hemmati called on the followers of the divine religions "to unite against secular thoughts".
Meanwhile a leading German scholar told the confab that the west has "always had its difficulties with Islam".
"Most of the causes are to be found in the west," said Peter Heine of Berlin's Humboldt University.
