US urges dialogue with Islamists
WASHINGTON: The United States on Friday called on the Somali government to open a dialogue with the leaders of Islamist tribes, saying “there is no military solution” in Somalia. “We want to see the (government) engaged with all the various political actors in the country,” said Tom Casey, a State Department spokesman. “Certainly individuals and groups that supported the Council of Islamic Courts are elements that want to be part of and want to help develop a Somali society and a lasting durable government ... need to be included in the process,” he said. The US government contacted leaders of Somali institutions to convey “our desire to see that process go forward.” Washington wants “all Somalis that wish to participate in a peaceful way in forming a broader set of institutions and in a government, be allowed to do so,” the State Department spokesman said. afp
