BELGIUM: SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN WILL BE 'COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE'...

Confab says sanctions against Iran will be counter-productive

A majority of speakers at an international conference on Iran's nuclear program in Brussels Tuesday said there was no evidence that Iran intends to produce nuclear arms, use of force against the Islamic Republic is out of question and sanctions will not work leaving dialogue as the only option to resolve the problem and fill the gap of mistrust.

The one-day event under the topic "Iran and its nuclear ambitions: What are the options? What is at stake?" was organized by the Brussels office of the Heinrich Boll Foundation which is a German political foundation associated with the German Green Party.

The conference was held under the Chatham House Rule under which the identity of the speakers cannot be revealed.

International and regional analysts and experts from Europe, the US, Turkey and Iran participated in the conference.

One US analyst said the EU will not support any military option against Iran and noted that Russia is the pivotal country to find a diplomatic solution.

He said that the victory of the Democrats will make it difficult for the Bush administration to embark on the military option against Iran.
