Pakistan admits US bombed school
November 27, 2006
THE bombing of a madrassa in which 82 students were killed last month was carried out by the US military, a Pakistani official admitted yesterday, despite earlier denials.
The madrassa (religious school) in the tribal area of Bajaur was bombed during a visit to Pakistan by Prince Charles after claims it was used to train suicide bombers.
"We thought it would be less damaging if we said we did it rather than the US," said a key aide to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. "But there was a lot of collateral damage and we've requested the Americans not to do it again."
US forces are believed to have attacked the school after a tip-off that Ayman al-Zawahiri, the al-Qa'ida No2, was present.
