Muslim Women 'Treasure' for Germany

Amid debates in the German media over thorny issues such as adaptation and the headscarf, German President Horst Kohler said that a probable failure in adaptation works would not be caused by the headscarf itself.

Noting that a certain amount of cosmopolitism would not hurt, Kohler described Muslim women as a “real treasure” for his country. In an interview that appeared in the Frankfurter Randschau paper, Kohler said: “I have recently had long conversations in Duisburg with Muslim women, who are real treasures for our country. Some were wearing headscarves; all were well-educated women, who had the ambition and determination to have a privileged status in society. We just need them!” Though he noted that along with these success stories, self-exclusionary examples could also be observed among Muslims residing in Germany.
