Blair Says Muslim Veil Represents `a Mark of Separation'
By Caroline Alexander
Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Prime Minister Tony Blair said the face-covering veil is a symbol of separation that sometimes makes it difficult for Muslim women to contribute to British society.
``In certain circumstances, it can make it difficult,'' Blair said at a monthly news conference in London today, when asked if a woman wearing a veil could make a full contribution to society.
``It is a mark of separation and that is why it makes other people from outside the community feel uncomfortable.''
The issue of the veil is part of broader question that has to do with the integration of Britain's 2 million Muslims, Blair said. Communities that ``integrate well, end up doing well,'' he said.
