IRAN: POTENTIAL BANNING OF COCA-COLA & PEPSI-COLA

IRAN: AUTHORITIES MOOT BAN ON COCA-COLA AND PEPSI

Tehran, 11 Oct. (AKI) - A special commission has been formed to study a possible ban on the world's best selling soft drink, Coca-Cola, and its rival, Pepsi Cola, which the Iranian authorities, MP Mohammad Reza Mir Tajaldini told the semi-official Fars news agency. "Iran rejects every form of collaboration with firms that give any kind of backing to the Zionist regime that occupies Palestine," he said.

"The commission will be made up of officials from the foreign ministry and lawmakers from the culture and national security commissions of the Majils (the Iranian parliament)," he stated.

Prompted by Israel's military offensives in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon in July, the Iranian government launched a major campaign urging consumers to stop buying a range of "Zionist" products ranging from Coca-Cola and Pepsi soft drinks to Calvin Klein clothing and Nestle food products.

A frequently aired three-minute broadcast on state television warned consumers: Pepsi stands for 'Pay Each Penny to Save Israel.' The broadcast told viewers: "Zionists are the biggest shareholders in the soft drinks industry, and each year they make billions of dollars for their colonialist aims." It also claimed that Israel "gave a great deal of money to topple the Islamic republic."
