SRINAGAR, INDIA

Islamic militants hurled a hand grenade at a police patrol in the Indian-controlled section of Kashmir yesterday, killing one person and wounding at least 23, officials said.

The grenade was thrown at a police vehicle that had stopped in a busy market in Sopor, a town about 30 miles north of Srinagar, the summer capital of India’s Jammu-Kashmir state, local police chief Viplav Kumar said.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded four officers and at least 20 civilians.

One of the wounded was declared dead on arrival at Srinagar’s main hospital, said Manzoor Ahmed, a doctor there.
