Top German official urges swift introduction of Islam classes
The integration commissioner of the German government, Maria Boehmer called for the swift introduction of state-supervised Islam classes at the country's school, the online daily Netzeitung reported Monday.
"We need to have Islam education which is accepted by Muslims in a bid to move the issue out of the the back rooms," Boehmer was quoted as saying.
German President Horst Koehler on Thursday urged last month the introduction of Islam classes at schools throughout the country.
Koehler said it was 'long overdue' for Muslim children to learn about Islam in schools by trained teachers.
Religious courses for the estimated 600,000 Muslim children living in Germany are guaranteed under its constitution, however it's up to each of the 16 German states whether Islam classes will be offered.
The issue of Islam education was also discussed during the recent government-sponsored Islam summit in Berlin.
Muslims number 3.5 million out of Germany's population of 82.5 million.
Will both moslem & non-moslem children be forced to attend these classes?!?
