Amnesty chief appalled by Australian Islamic cleric's comments
Amnesty International's first female Muslim Secretary General, Irene Khan, says she is appalled by an Australian Islamic cleric who compared unveiled women to 'uncovered meat.'
Sheikh Taj el-din al-Hilaly has also been quoted saying women incite rape by the way they dress.
The senior cleric is in hospital following a suspected heart attack just moments after he indicated he would step down, while the Muslim community decides his fate.
Ms Khan believes the Mufti does not deserve the privilege of leadership, though she says its time for the debate to move on.
Irene Khan says the Sheikh's views represent only a small minority of Muslim people, and communities should take their own action.
"I think a lot of the responsibility lies with the Muslim communities themselves and they need to rise to that responsibility here and take action," she said.
"At the same time the government should not target or demonise the Muslim community itself because of what one individual is saying."
There is a sense among the Muslims that this man does not represent them any more than Pauline Hansen represented Australian views."
How long has it been since Sheik Halili made his statements and Ms. Khan finally responds, but not quite she must defend the ummah and the Australian government cannot stigmatize them...
BLAHHH...
BLLLAAAHHHH...
