Demand for Islamic subjects rises at US varsities

DOHA • The post 9/11 scenario has triggered a growing demand for Islamic subjects at universities in the US, according to two visiting experts from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) based in Richmond.

Dr Sheila Blair and Dr Jonathan Bloom, the couple who jointly hold the Hamad bin Khalifa Chair of Islamic Art at VCU Richmond is currently visiting Qatar on the invitation of the Virginian Commonwealth University School of Arts in Qatar (VCUQ).

Talking to The Peninsula yesterday, Blair and Bloom said, there was an urgent need to set up more Islamic chairs in universities in the US, especially in the field of Islamic art and culture. Currently very few universities in the country are offering such subjects.

Most Americans are ignorant about the glorious aspects of Islam since they are viewing the Islamic world only through the eye of terrorism. The current incidents have however generated more interest in Islam and the Arab world, noted the duo.

For instance, in Boston College, there are more students for Arabic language compared to German. This was not the case five years ago, said Sheila.

Calling for more venues to learn Islamic art and architecture, Sheila said, "This is the area where we should start with. The Americans should know how Muslims, whom they view as terrorists, were able to create such beautiful pieces of art and architecture throughout their history."

The Hamad bin Khalifa Chair at VCU Richmond, established by the Emir of Qatar last year will organise an international symposium on Islamic art in Doha in November next year, they said.
The first symposium was held in Richmond last year. The biennial event will alternate between Doha and Richmond.
