DAMASCUS - Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani said on Wednesday that Teheran was willing to continue ‘constructive’ talks with the European Union over its disputed nuclear programme.

‘It is important that the negotiations go on in a constructive manner and we are continuing them with (EU foreign policy chief) Javier Solana,’ Larijani said during a visit to Syria, Iran’s main regional ally.

Washington -- which leads Western concerns that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons -- on Tuesday formally endorsed a new round of negotiations between Larijani and Solana to try to resolve the long-running standoff.

The United States had previously been pushing for sanctions after Iran failed to meet a UN Security Council resolution calling for Teheran to halt uranium enrichment by August 31.

‘The negotiations are continuing in order to create a climate of security and stability in the region,’ Larijani said after talks with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and Vice President Faruq Al Shara.
