Moyo Christian, Muslim leaders clash in meeting
The religious row between Christian and Muslim students in Itula Secondary School, which resulted into a bloody clash on July 1 remains unresolved, writes Dradenya Amazia.
A meeting held on Monday to discuss the crisis hit a snag after the different religious leaders disagreed. The meeting was attended by over 500 people who included parents, students, security, district and religious leaders.
During the July 1 clash, five students were injured by the Police who tried to calm down a students’ strike.
The dominantly Muslim school was thrown into chaos when students clashed over a goat slaughtered by Christians at a party hosted by the Scripture Union.
During the meeting, the two parties were displeased with the resolutions from the school board of governors.
The board recommended that meat be bought from licensed sellers, prohibited the construction of mosques or churches in the school and each student was fined sh3,000 for the property vandalised during the strike.
The Moyo district Khadi (Muslim leader) for Madi sub-region, Sheik Abubakar Kokoa, said the conflict had affected the whole district. “It has gone far, the Christians want to destroy our mosque in Laropi and if that happens, then all the churches and mosques in Uganda will be destroyed.
The Christian leaders asked the Muslims to apologise for insulting Christianity by calling it dirty.
