Sarkozy says France faces high terror threat, praises British anti-terror cameras
PARIS: The threat of a terrorist attack in France remains "high," President Nicolas Sarkozy said in an interview released Saturday, and he praised British anti-terror efforts.
The Tour de France opened in London amid tight security Saturday — the second anniversary of the suicide attacks that killed 52 commuters and four bombers.
In France, which was hit by a string of terrorist bombings in the 1990s but has not seen a major attack in a decade, Sarkozy told the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, "The threat is general and high."
He said he ordered the Interior Ministry to draw up a plan for more cameras in public transport starting this fall. Britain has 25 million such cameras, he said, while France has just 1 million.
"I was very impressed by the effectiveness of the British police thanks to this network of cameras. There is no contradiction, in my view, between respect of individual freedom and the installation of cameras," he was quoted as saying.
